Fall Activities Near Philadelphia, PA

A classic sightseeing getaway out of Philadelphia, the Lehigh Valley is gorgeous all year-round, not least on our very own rolling, resplendent, 150 acres here at the Glasbern. No question, though, that fall sees our pastoral scenery reach its scenic zenith.

That, of course, is due to the profusion of some of the richest fall colors anywhere in the world. And the razzle-dazzle foliage comes beautifully complemented by all of the other pleasures of the season, not least the bounty fresh off the region’s many farms, orchards, and vineyards.

Join us for premium hospitality here at our Historic Hotel of America in the Lehigh Valley countryside on a much-needed escape from the big city this fall! Here are just a few of the autumnal delights that await you.

Leaf-Peeping

Our native hardwood trees and shrubs put on an absolutely stunning show in the fall, with a fiery foliage medley of reds, oranges, yellows, purples, and browns. Hitting a hiking trail, cycling swoony backroads, or indulging in an afternoon drive with no particular place to go, you’ll find yourself awash in head-spinning scenery.

Along with a jaunt on the fabulous multi-use trail of the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, a fine option for “leaf-peeping” is the roughly 50-mile-long Lehigh Valley Covered Bridge Tour, which besides the arboreal palette shows off seven historic covered bridges. The oldest—the pedestrian-only Kreidersville Covered Bridge—dates all the way back to 1839!

Farmers Markets, Wineries, and Breweries

Sipping some transcendent vino at one of the wineries or tasting rooms of the Lehigh Valley American Viticultural Area—or perhaps some refreshing suds at one of our area’s ace craft breweries—is a heck of a way to toast the season.

So is a visit to one of the numerous regional farmers markets, where the fall harvest will be on full display. Nearby markets include those of Allentown and Emmaus, not to mention the most venerable continuously operating open-air market in the U.S.: Easton Farmers’ Market.

Seasonal Fun

You’ll find no shortage of corn mazes, pumpkin patches, and u-pick apple orchards within easy reach while you’re enjoying our warm-hearted luxury Glasbern hospitality. There’s timeless fall fun (and photo ops) at every turn in our Lehigh Valley wonderland.

A World-Class Natural Spectacle Up on Hawk Mountain

We’re lucky to count one of the country’s most spectacular birdwatching sites—a genuinely world-renowned one—as part of our big backyard here at the Glasbern. About a half-hour away, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary marks a long-running observation point for migrating raptors taking advantage of the auspicious travel corridor of the Blue Mountain Ridge escarpment.

The Sanctuary—the oldest such site dedicated to birds of prey—runs its Autumn Hawk Watch from mid-August through mid-December, during which thousands of raptors sail over: broad-winged and red-shouldered hawks, turkey and black vultures, bald and golden eagles, peregrine falcons and northern goshawks, and others. This is a must-do fall experience!

Best Hotel for Pennsylvania Wine Trail

Part of the fabric of the Lehigh Valley is its rich winemaking tradition, which has been going strong for decades. As a guest of ours here at Glasbern - A Historic Hotel of America, you’re perfectly poised to explore that tradition firsthand via the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail. Combining our exceptional hospitality with an oenophilic journey through our region’s fabulous vineyards and tasting rooms.

The Lehigh Valley Wine Trail

One of a number of designated wine trails in the Keystone State, the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail makes for a lovely (and lip-smacking) circuit through the fertile soils and hilly beauty of our big backyard—and it’s right at your fingertips when you call Glasbern your home away from home!

A number of fine regional wineries constitute the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail. They include Black River Farms (2472 Black River Rd, Bethlehem, PA), established in 2009 and offering better than nine acres producing some 14 grape varieties. Along with the winery itself—open every day except Tuesday—you can sip these reds, whites, rosés, and sparkling wines at the Black River Wine Bar at Trolley Barn in Quakertown.

Then there’s Vynecrest Vineyards & Winery (172 Arrowhead Lane, Breinigsville, PA), among the oldest of the Lehigh Valley’s winemaking operations: Its grapevines were first planted back in 1974. Open daily, the winery maintains a tasting room and the Vyneskeller wine bar, which regularly features live music to soundtrack your enjoyment of wine (and wine slushies!), beer, and appetizers.

Franklin Hill Vineyards (7833 Franklin Hill Rd, Bangor, PA) also has a venerable history: Its founder, Elaine Pivinski—one of the pioneers of Pennsylvania winemaking—purchased the original 35 acres with her husband in 1975. You can enjoy wines such as Sir Walter’s Red, Fainting Goat, and Swan Song at the vineyard itself, or at such satellite locations as the Bartonsville Wine Shop in Stroudsberg and The Grape Spot in Easton.

Established in 2007, Tolino Vineyards (280 Mount Pleasant Rd, Bangor, PA) is another must-stop along the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail, producing Cabernet Franc, Vidal Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and more on its scenic acreage. Soak up the flavors and the views from the tasting room, the patio, or the picnic area.

Enjoy Lehigh Valley Wine on a Glasbern Getaway

A jaunt or two on the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail makes a fine daytrip during a stay with us here at Glasbern, with our expansive, rolling, pond-scattered grounds an inviting place to return to after some winery-hopping.
